We all know exercise is important—we know it leads to healthier lives and makes our minds and bodies strong. For me, the hardest part about getting adequate exercise sometimes is my desire to stay home and not go to a gym (I’m lazy, btw). When I attempt to stay motivated and work out at home I find that I cut my workout short and don’t push myself as hard as I could/should.


That being said, there is something nice and convenient about squeezing in a workout in the comfort of your own home. I’ve recently discovered the wonderful world of YouTube fitness that allows me to stay home while being active. There are countless free workouts online that can help you achieve your fitness goals (whatever they can be) and it can be difficult to navigate this vast terrain. I’ve gone ahead and selected some of my favorite YouTube fitness gurus. These trainers and their videos are motivating, supportive, and make me sweat.

Cassey Ho, blogilates


When it comes to at-home workouts, Cassey Ho’s blogilates workouts could be all you need. Her YouTube channel is extensive and she has many videos that target certain areas (arms/legs/abs/bum/back), many great total body workouts, and high-energy HIIT cardio (high intensity interval training) as well. I first found her workouts in college when I needed to do something in my small dorm room (because the gym, being a 3 minute walk, was too far away) and I have returned to her time and time again. Her personality is super sunny (to the point where I sometimes find myself sweating on the floor rolling my eyes) but her positivity and motivation make you feel like she is in the room with you cheering you on. Cassey focuses on relying on your own body to build strength—the only thing you’ll need to do Cassey’s workouts is a mat. Her workouts are challenging and have pointed out to me how weak I am. She can sometimes be gimmicky and she loves her pop music but the workout is good enough to ignore it. Cassey’s videos range from 5 – 30 minutes which is great to tailor your workout. You can end a run with her 6-minute arm blaster or make one of her total-body hell workouts the main event.

Karena Dawn & Katrina Hodgson, Tone it Up


The ladies at Tone it Up are always on the beach, always tan, always have perfect mermaid hair, and always kick my ass. Most of their workouts are done on the beach and they feature sculpting, HIIT, and yoga videos. Although some videos require kettlebells and weights, many of the workouts utilize your body for resistance. Their instruction is simple and after one of these you’ll want nothing more than to run away to a tropical oasis and live in your bikini and sweat with Karena & Katrina (not sisters…I was convinced they were for the longest time).

POPSUGAR Fitness offers fitness tutorials and workouts curated by people who love fit. POPSUGAR is great because they feature many many different trainers and types of workouts (standard strength training, cardio & HIIT,  kickboxing, and even Beyonce-inspired dance). They channel has 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 minute video series that either target specific areas or focus on your total body to help tailor your workout and their playlist are organized well. They are filmed in a class environment and they all seem to be best friends who are going to go out for organic pressed juices after their workout. Try POPSUGAR for variety in your routine!

Adriene Mishler, Yoga with Adriene 

Adriene Mishler is an Austin, TX based Yogi who has a giant library of yoga videos published to her YouTube channel every Wednesday. Yoga with Adriene films at her at-home studio and offers videos for beginners, weight loss, runners, headaches, prenatal, winter blues, hangovers, and for when you’re in a bad mood. Adriene is incredibly positive and has fun with her classes while helping me find balance and integrity in my practice. I love her constant reminders to smile during my practice and “find what feels good”. Her direction is clear and I actually understands what she means when she says things like “breath into your thighs”. She is a huge advocate of doing what feels right and making the practice your own, which is essential in yoga.  She also hosted a 30-day challenge earlier this year which is still available (I finished day 5 this morning). This challenge is a great way for beginners and seasoned yogis alike to get into the practice and is well-balanced. Videos range from 5-45 minutes, allowing you to get a quick burst of yoga in or to achieve full practice and making yoga accessible and friendly for all.

Erin Motz, Bad Yogi

Erin Motz calls herself a ‘bad yogi’ because she loves her wine and cheese and burgers as much as she loves yoga. She believes yoga is inclusive and should be for everyone—often, yoga communities can look down on folks for not following a certain lifestyle outside of the practice. Erin wants yoga to feel good and wants us all to succeed! Her page features full-length videos, pose tutorials (including her ‘This not That’ which gives examples of how NOT to do certain poses) and a 10-day yoga challenge. Erin is the first person that hasn’t made me feel guilty for enjoying my wine/meat/cell phone/life while being a part of a yoga practice.

Kino MacGregor, KinoYoga


Kino MacGregor is an Ashtangi that has been practicing yoga every day for the past 15 years. She has studies the practice in India and is known for her amazing strength. When I first found KinoYoga, I was discouraged and thought I could never do what she does but her beginner videos make the practice accessible. She is supportive, motivating, and truly wants the journey to be about each individual’s practice.

Nicole Zumba

If you’re looking for some upbeat at-home cardio, Zumba is a great choice for you! Nicole Zumba offers  variety of at-home Zumba workouts that are about 4 minutes in length—each video features one dance routine to one song that is generally easy to follow. Her videos mainly feature contemporary American artists (Katy Perry, Selena Gomez, Lady GaGa, Justin Timberlake, etc). Latin dance may be intimidating to my gringo friends that have no exposure, so this is a great introduction! She dances with her Zumba class and they all look they are having so much fun. They are also dancing at different levels which can be encouraging if you can’t do it quite like Nicole. Nicole Zumba’s channel also has cool down videos, so you can add a few to a workout or play a bunch for a day of Zumba.

Laura Luna Zumba

Another great Zumba alternative, Laura Luna’s videos are energetic and fun. While Nicole choreographs to mostly American popular music, Laura Luna sticks to Zumba’s roots and offers videos that highlight various Latin dances, such as Salsa, Meringue, Cumbia, Reggaeton, and Bachata. You can tell she is having much—she dances with energy and is always smiling (even while reciting the lyrics to the music playing). Like Nicole, Laura Luna’s videos are short and focused on one routine so you can add a sequence to your daily routine to mix and match. Her routines are a bit harder to follow and may require a practice round. That being said, they are super fun and I forgot I was working out!

Kayla Itsines, Bikini Body Guide


Kayla Itsines is probably one of the biggest names in internet fitness right now. Although known for her expensive 12-week workout guides and insane instagram transformations, her YouTube channel provides very very short (we are talking under 20 seconds) videos of her doing various workouts. She recommends you do 15-20 reps and sends you on your way! Kayla Itsines has built up a following and although this one won’t walk you through much, it is a great option for when you’re short on time and want to do something that will get you’re heart pumping.
